The 14kw standby generator from Generac Power Systems produces up to 14 kilowatts of power during a power outage to keep both essential and convenience circuits running until the electric utility restores power. The generator and automatic transfer switch are a permanently installed system that detect outages and start automatically―even when you are not present―to supply your home with electrical power for refrigerators, sump pumps, air conditioners, and other essential appliances.
Generac builds their standby generators to use either LP gas (propane) or natural gas. Generators are configured at the factory to run on natural gas, but converting to LP gas is a simple procedure performed during installation. The 14kw will produce up to 14,000 watts of power while running on either fuel. Running at half the rated electrical load, the generator consumes about 177 cubic feet of natural gas per hour, or about 1.9 gallons of LP gas per hour. Fuel consumption is directly related to the electrical load; as the electrical load changes, so does the fuel consumption rate.
The 14kW generator employs a 992cc overhead valve industrial engine designed by Generac specifically to handle the demands of a standby generator system. It features a fully pressurized oil system similar to an automobile engine, a solid state ignition system, and a 200 hour maintenance interval to allow for extended operation during a long-term power outage.
Engine design includes extra-rigid Spiny-Lok cylinder construction, plasma moly rings, and plateau-honed cylinder walls which extend engine life and reduce oil consumption. Automatic shutdown protects the engine from damage caused by low oil or high temperature conditions.
Generac’s Evolution Controller handles all aspects of the standby generator operation. It continuously monitors the utility power supply until it senses an outage. After a 10 second delay (dealer programmable from 2 to 1500 seconds) it starts the generator and signals the automatic transfer switch to move the house onto standby generator power. During operation, it keeps the engine speed at a constant 3600 RPM and regulates the voltage to provide a clean, steady source of electricity suitable for sensitive electronics and comparable to power supplied by electric utilities.
When the electric utility supply is restored, the transfer switch reconnects power from the utility. The controller allows the generator to run without load for about one minute, then shuts down the engine.
The Evolution includes a smart battery charger, programmable exercise periods, maintenance alerts, and advanced fault detection and reporting. It will sense a dying battery and notify the owner that it requires changing.
Optional controller accessories (sold separately) include Mobile Link, a messaging system that sends status updates to your cellular phone and allows you to access the controller from a smart phone, tablet, or computer from anywhere with an internet connection. You can schedule maintenance, program exercise periods, and view generator status from inside the house or across the country. The basic wireless monitor allows you to view generator status inside the house. The advanced wireless monitor provides access to alerts, generator testing, programming maintenance, and much more.
The generating unit has a brushless design with a revolving magnetic field and skewed stators. Brushless design gives the unit a longer life, while the revolving field and skewed stators provide a cleaner electrical signal, even when under a heavy load supporting high-demand appliances like air conditioners and well pumps. A high reserve capacity allows the generator unit to provide enough electricity to start large motors, even when the unit is operating at the upper end of its maximum continuous load range.
Generac air-cooled standby generators fit easily into any urban setting. The attractive steel enclosure has a powder coat paint finish for a long lasting finish that withstands harsh coastal environments. Lockable access ports prevent tampering and provide easy access to the control panel and generator. This unit is 48 inches wide, 25 inches deep and 29 inches high. The 14kw produces about 66db of noise, similar to central air conditioning units.
